i've considered the basics, such as the camo shirt/jacket+ trousers and a webbing vest, it all depends on the weapons i get really, and i'm not going to get any for a while

Well, weapon-wise, its all down to you. All weapons have pros and cons (ignoring the manufacturers for now) - M4s are usually covered in RiS rails, G36s are light weight, AKs look nice, etc...

Camo wise, wear what you like the looks of, and whats practical. You could go full British Army of 2005 in Iraq load-out, or you could go Special Forces, Mercs/PMCs and the like. The latter are usually more comfortable (and cheaper) than the former.
